Greetings, friends, and Happy New Year. As is a human tradition, around the holidays and particularly around the turn of the calendar people tend to take stock of their situation and start making promises of change for the better. January 2013 feels like the right time for us at Damn Lies & Statistics to take a large(r) step back from producing fantasy basketball content on a regular basis.
You may have noticed we already have stopped. Indeed, this has been a season of open threads, which we have enjoyed, but original content and our weekly show have disappeared. There are good reasons for this, but they are mostly personal and sometimes professional reasons. In short, our team just can’t devote the necessary time and energy right now to producing a humming, viable fantasy hoops blog.
That’s not fair, or fun, for us or you the reader. But from the beginning, this has been a labor of love only, a site that has been fortunate to find a small place on the web. We’ve never made money here, nor was that the goal. We always knew it would be a temporary thing, a place to leave thoughts and rankings and jokes and such, but nothing more. We knew and indeed hoped that writing here and elsewhere would lead to greater opportunities; that perhaps DLS would take off, but that more likely other things would take off first, and go farther, faster.
In the past year, I have begun a start-up business in addition to my full-time job, and both exist outside of the fantasy realm. Tom’s in a similar situation, and he’s also taken steps up in the blogosphere, from covering the Grizzlies for Straight Outta Vancouver at SB Nation, to a bump up in notoriety and, yes, his time, at NetsDaily. Greg has always given more than he had to, because he has one of those full-time jobs that just doesn’t offer much leeway.
I won’t say we’re done, not collectively or individually, but it is time to step back. We may be back some day, as DLS or something else, as a team again or as individuals who love fantasy hoops and holding court on the subject. We will still love the NBA. I will still watch the games every night, albeit with my back turned as I work on my business. You can still, and we encourage this, chat with us on Twitter (@JeffAndriesse, @TomLorenzo, @gregfoxy5). We can still be sounding boards, just very busy and sometimes distracted ones.
We’re genuinely appreciative of our readers, especially those who have come back again and again, even several we count as friends. We wish you a very Happy New Year, and may your resolutions flower while we’re working on some of ours.
